Cleaning products that are lying around the house might not always be the safest way to clean your home. Often, they contain many nasty ingredients that can prove harmful to your health and that of your family. Here are some natural green cleaning products that are safer and get the job done.

What’s in that Cleaning Agent?

Although you might love the fresh scent of your scrubbed floors or countertops, thanks to the latest cleaning agent you’ve used, chances are you’re inhaling a lot more than a sweet granadilla or orange scent. There are many harmful ingredients that can be found in cleaning agents, which could result in terrible side-effects such as dizziness, difficulty breathing, nausea, headaches and allergic reactions, and even more serious ones such as behavioral problems or ADHD. Now imagine your child playing on the floors you’ve just scrubbed with your new product and all the poison that he or she could be inhaling.

Some of these toxic houseguests include:

Carcinogens – These can cause cancer or promote the growth of cancer in the body.

Endocrine disruptors – These mimic human hormones such as estrogen and can lead to many health problems, such as decreased fertility, menstrual problems, ADHD, as well as certain cancers.

Neurotoxins – These change neurons and affect the brain’s activity. They can lead to headaches and even loss of intellect.

Phthalates – These are found in plastics and usually those that contain air freshener or perfume. They are also endocrine disruptors and could be linked to cancers.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) – These are emitted in the air as gases and they contain many chemicals. Usually found in disinfectants, air fresheners and deodorisers, VOCs contain harmful ingredients such as propane, butane and phthalates. They are hazardous to human health, causing cancer as well as toxins in the reproductive system and liver.

Natural Cleaning

Using natural cleaning options are much better for your home and they’re also safer for your children and pets. Here are some easy ways to make your own natural cleaning products:

Natural Scrub

  • Simply mix ½ cup of water with ¼ cup of baking soda in two liters of water. This is a great all-purpose cleaner that you can use on floors, countertops or in the bathroom. The baking soda is a wonderful natural scrub that gets rid of dirt and leaves surfaces feeling and looking clean. It’s also fragrance-free!

Disinfectant

  • To keep your home germ-free without requiring the use of chemicals, mix two cups of water into a spray bottle and add 20 drops of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is great for killing bacteria such as e-coli and salmonella, so it’s wonderful for use as a disinfectant in the bathroom and on kitchen surfaces. Add two tablespoons of white vinegar to the solution. White vinegar helps to kill germs with its acid content. Finally, add some dishwashing liquid to strengthen the cleaning abilities of the mixture. Make sure you use organic dishwashing liquid that will help boost the solution’s cleaning power without any hazardous chemicals.
